چکیده

This article discusses four functions of gesture that could promote thought processes: as a tool to ground knowledge through the visual system; enhance short-term and long-term memories; motor suppress irrelevant information. Gestures contribute grounding concepts metaphors describe abstract in terms visually perceivable concepts. In this way, at least some aspects concept be grounded system. memories two ways: by filtering out elements representation thus reducing load on memory; storing representing information form organized, appropriate, easily recallable units. can process system activating areas offering actions simulated mind individual. suppressive mechanism which extraneous stimuli contextually unnecessary are omitted. Through mechanism, both spatio-motoric non-spatio-motoric suppressed. Thus, more cognitive resources assigned relevant parts task hand.

Gesture and Thought

Both a synopsis and extension of Gesture and Thought (the book), the present essay explores how gestures and language work together in a dialectic. In this analysis the ‘purpose’ of gesture is to fuel and propel thought and speech. A case study illustrates the dependence of verbal thought on context and how it functions. Problems for computational modeling, the presence and absence of gesture ‘...

Synthesis Thought Processes in Design

In this paper, we discuss what properties the synthesis process should have as a thought process and show a tentative synthesis theory. Instead of universality and minimality for knowledge for analysis, knowledge for synthesis in design needs physicality, unlikeness, and desirability. Physicality ensures possibility of existence, while unlikeness and desirability ensure newness, i.e., unlikenes...

Gesture changes thought by grounding it in action.

When people talk, they gesture. We show that gesture introduces action information into speakers' mental representations, which, in turn, affect subsequent performance. In Experiment 1, participants solved the Tower of Hanoi task (TOH1), explained (with gesture) how they solved it, and solved it again (TOH2). For all participants, the smallest disk in TOH1 was the lightest and could be lifted w...

Gesture Types for Functions

This paper reports on the different gesture types employed by twenty-three Year 10 students as they endeavoured to explain their understanding of rate of change associated with the functions resulting from two different computer simulations. These gestures also have application to revealing students’ understanding of functions. However, interpretation of gesture is problematic but classificatio...
